The Cathedral Community Safety Zone Launches on August 12
Starting August 12, the City of Regina will help improve road safety by establishing the City’s first Community Safety Zone in the Cathedral neighbourhood. Community Safety Zones are areas with a reduced 40 km/h speed limit.
“These new Community Safety Zones provide us an opportunity to improve road safety with additional measures for specific areas in the City,” said Chris Warren, the Director of Roadways and Transportation for the City of Regina. “Traffic safety is of high importance to both the City of Regina and our residents.”
The City has installed new signs at all entrances and exits of the Cathedral Community Safety Zone to inform residents about the reduced speed limit. Residents can find a map of the area here.
The Regina Police Service will begin enforcing the reduced speed limit on August 12.
“Anytime we can decrease a vehicle’s speed we increase reaction time for both the driver and other users of the roadway,” said Sergeant Shannon Gordon of the Regina Police Service. “Equally as important, by decreasing speed we dramatically increase survivability and decrease severity of injury if contact is made with a pedestrian or cyclist.”
Reducing the speed limit from 50 km/h to 40 km/h decreases the likelihood of fatality in the event of an accident from 85 per cent to 30 per cent.
Community Safety Zones are part of Vision Zero, an action plan that outlines how the City can support, or collaborate with, community partners on road safety initiatives.
“We are excited to collaborate with the City to increase the safety of our neighbourhood streets. The Community Safety Zone will help make Cathedral a more comfortable and safer place for residents and visitors alike to enjoy our local businesses, parks and the many amenities that make our community special,” said Jonathan Lorenc, Chair of the Cathedral Area Community Association.
School Zones will remain 30 km/hr across the city, including within the Cathedral area. School Zones are also marked with signage.
