Stay Fire Safe During the Holiday Season
With the holiday season here, Regina Fire & Protective Services reminds residents to stay fire safe when decorating, cooking and enjoying outdoor activities.
During the holidays, be aware of these important safety tips:
- Ice and Water – Inconsistent air temperatures make ice surfaces unpredictable. Keep away from all bodies of water, including Wascana Lake and Creek, storm channels and detention ponds. If an emergency on the ice occurs involving pets or people, call 9-1-1.
- Cooking – Cooking fires are the leading cause of residential fires in Regina. Keep everyone safe by staying in the kitchen when cooking on the stovetop. Remember, if your cooking catches on fire, calmly slide a lid over the pot or pan to smother the fire.
- String Lights and Decorations – Holiday lights can add a beautiful sparkle to the holiday season when used safely. Keep decorations and other home textiles away from string lights and candles. Ensure you turn holiday lights off before going to bed.
- Candles – Use candles safely around the holidays and all year round by placing candles on a fire safe, stable surface and always staying in the room when a candle is lit. Extinguish all candles completely before leaving the room.
- Christmas Trees – The smell of a live tree puts everyone in the holiday spirit but if it’s not cared for, it can become a fire hazard. Ensure it is watered daily and kept away from all heat sources. After the holidays, Treecycle your tree by dropping it off at the Yard Waste Depot, Monday to Saturday from December 26, 2023 to January 31, 2024.
- Fireplaces and wood stoves – Enjoy your fireplace safely by ensuring it is professionally inspected and cleaned. Ensure all decorations such as stockings and garlands are kept a safe distance away from the fire.
