Overnight Warming Bus Back on the Road in Regina
Due to the extreme cold weather hitting Regina right now, the City is making an overnight warming bus available to people experiencing houselessness. The warming bus provides urgently needed alternative shelter to people who currently sleep outdoors and will enhance the safety and well-being of residents during cold winter nights.
“The City is committed to the safety and well-being of everyone in our community, especially those experiencing houselessness. When temperatures drop to life-threatening lows, it’s critical to provide additional emergency measures like the warming bus,” said Dave Slater, Manager, Community Well-being.
The City monitors weather conditions and works closely with community-based organizations to support vulnerable populations year-round. During these critically cold temperatures, the City collaborated with RTSIS, the Regina Street Team, and dedicated community volunteers from the Heritage Community, to activate a Regina Transit bus for four nights (Feb. 17–20) to help ensure immediate safety for those experiencing houselessness.
The warming bus is running again tonight from 7 p.m. to 9 a.m. and tomorrow and Thursday it will run from 5 p.m. to 9 a.m. It travels from Carmichael Outreach on the 1500 block of 12th Avenue to the All Nations Hope Network Awasiw Warming Centre, making stops along the route at the Salvation Army, the YWCA, and on 11th Avenue by Newo Yotina (Number 1 Fire Hall).
A bus operator as well as outreach and security staff will be on the bus to maintain a safe space for everyone. Communications equipment is in place to quickly and easily contact emergency services, if required.
