Electric Buses Added to Regina’s Transit Fleet
Seven zero-emission electric buses have replaced existing diesel-powered ones in the City’s public transit fleet. These new buses will be on the road starting next week. An additional 13 electric buses will be delivered to Regina Transit’s fleet in 2026.
"Today, we take a bold and exciting step toward a cleaner, greener future for Regina. With the arrival of these new electric buses, we are creating a more sustainable and environmentally friendly way for residents to get around,” said Mayor Chad Bachynski. “These buses will reduce emissions, lower operational costs, and support our commitment to building a resilient, forward-thinking city. Investing in green technology is investing in Regina’s future—one where clean air, smart infrastructure and sustainability lead the way.”
The seven buses cost $1.37 million each. These buses are funded through 50 per cent cost sharing with the federal government, as part of the Zero Emission Transit Fund. The federal government of Canada and the City of Regina each contributed $26,106,500, for a combined investment of approximately $52.2 million going towards 20 buses and the infrastructure to support the charging stations.
Officially announced by the federal government and the City of Regina in February 2024, this investment supports the City’s transition to zero emission public transit infrastructure and contributes to Canada’s net-zero emissions targets.
“Starting next week, you will see the electric buses take to the streets on a variety of routes, helping the growing number of Regina residents get around conveniently, affordably and comfortably,” said Nathan Luhning, Director of Transit.
The Zero Emission Transit Fund provides funding to help cities shift public transportation away from fossil fuel towards zero emission alternatives, and funds up to 50 per cent of eligible costs for capital projects such as the purchase of buses, charging and refueling infrastructure and other supporting infrastructure needs.
