Construction Starting on Speaker’s Corner Drainage Renewal Project
Work on the Speaker’s Corner Drainage Renewal Project begins today and continues into the fall. Once the project is finished, it will provide stormwater drainage throughout the downtown and surrounding area. Work will impact the Albert Street and 19th Avenue intersection as well as areas within Wascana Centre.
“A city that invests in its infrastructure invests in its future,” says Carolyn Kalim, Director Water, Waste and Environment. “Speaker’s Corner Drainage Renewal Project will play a key role in strengthening Regina’s stormwater network for years to come.”
The construction will result in lane restrictions on Albert Street between the Albert Memorial Bridge and Leopold Crescent, as well as a closure of the walking path along Wascana Creek at Angus Boulevard. Additional traffic restrictions will occur as the work progresses along 19th Avenue and Angus Boulevard.
This project will address damage that occurred in 2023, when one of Regina’s primary stormwater drains along the Albert Memorial Bridge collapsed, requiring a temporary stormwater management system adjacent to Speaker’s Corner in Wascana Centre. The design will ensure stormwater flows efficiently away from homes, businesses and roadways, directing water into Wascana Creek, reducing the risk of flooding and supporting continued growth in Regina.
Residents can stay informed about traffic restrictions associated with this project and other construction projects by visiting the construction map online at Regina.ca/ConstructionMap. The map provides up-to-date information about planned infrastructure improvements, including expected construction start and end dates.
The City reminds all residents to plan ahead when traveling near construction zones, reduce speed and drive safely to help protect both workers and fellow road users.
