Black-capped Chickadee Named Regina’s Official Bird
The Black-capped Chickadee soared above its competition in Regina’s Bird Friendly City contest. The small but mighty winged winner received more than 8,500 votes to win the title of Regina’s Official Bird.
Regina residents proved to be passionate about our feathered friends, flocking to Regina.ca/bird during the voting period. More than 21,000 votes were submitted in total.
“The Bird Friendly City Committee is very pleased with the level of enthusiasm displayed by our community during the voting process. “We think Regina residents made an excellent choice in naming the Black-capped Chickadee as our official city bird,” said Angela Tremka, Program Coordinator for Bird Friendly Regina.
The chickadee’s feathered competition consisted of:
- American Pelican
- Canada Goose
- Gray Partridge
- Peregrine Falcon
- Red-breasted Nuthatch
In March 2022, through the work of Regina’s Bird Friendly City Committee, Regina was officially declared a Bird City through Nature Canada’s Bird Friendly City Program. Bird Friendly City Regina is a volunteer committee with 14 members from community and local environmental non-profits such as Nature Saskatchewan, Nature Regina and Salthaven West.
Regina residents are encouraged to visit Regina.ca/bird for information on how to protect our feathered friends, and opportunities to share their pictures of local birds.
