Be Prepared. Know Your Risks. Emergency Preparedness Week 2025

May 4 to 10 is Emergency Preparedness Week in Canada. This year’s theme – Be Prepared. Know Your Risks – encourages everyone to understand the risks in their area and learn what actions they can take to protect themselves and their families during a disaster.

To support community preparedness, the City refreshed its local emergency alert system in March, notifynow, and will send a test emergency notification to residents through its emergency alert system sometime this week.

“Emergencies can happen at any time and often without warning, especially in our province which faces severe weather like thunderstorms and extreme cold,” said Fire Chief Layne Jackson. “It’s important for residents to understand the risks, take steps to be prepared, and keep an emergency kit ready. Having a plan in place for you and your family will save precious time if you ever need to act quickly.”

In just three easy steps, Regina residents can become better prepared in the event of an emergency:

1. Know the risks – knowing the risks that are specific to Regina (e.g. extreme cold, severe thunderstorms, tornadoes) can help residents be prepared in the event of a power or gas outage.
2. Make a plan – having a plan prepared for you and your family will save you time if you need to act quickly during an emergency.  Learn how to develop a family emergency plan at getprepared.ca
3. Get an emergency kit – It is recommended to be self-sufficient for at least 72 hours during an emergency event. To help ensure your kit is easy to carry, think about the members of your family, including pets, when you purchase one or put one together.
4. Sign up for notifynow - receive emergency alerts in case of an unexpected event in the City. Register online at regina.ca/notifynow

This week, the City will launch a giveaway on its social media channels sharing information on emergency preparedness. Residents can participate by commenting on the posts for a chance to win a 72-hour emergency kit.
