Advancing waste diversion initiatives into the businesses, schools non-residential sector supports the City’s goals outlined in Waste Plan Regina, including keeping divertible waste out of the landfill. The City is committed to Design Regina priorities to promote conservation, environmental stewardship and sustainability through the adoption of leading practices in waste management. Approximately 70 per cent of what goes to the Landfill come from businesses– not homes. We need to do our part and show Regina businesses that environmental sustainability is possible.

Learn more about the Green Routine.
What is the Green Routine?
- It’s a whole new way for City employees and residents to recycle, compost and reduce waste at City-owned facilities.
- The Green Routine is a multi-stream waste system that is proven to improve waste diversion – Mixed Recycling, Compost, Refundables and Landfill.
Why is the City moving forward with expanding the multi-stream waste system in all facilities?
- Aligns with the City’s Waste Plan Regina goals to divert waste and become a more sustainable city by 2050.
- Ensures all City-owned and operated facilities have consistent waste practices, including outside spaces.
- Increases diversion by 3.7 times on average.
- Establishes the City as a leader in waste management best practices and puts the City in a position to begin regulating the business sector.
- Ensures consistency with waste practices inside and outside of the home.
When can we anticipate regulations for the business sectors?
- Administration is working on developing proposed regulations. Prior to bringing regulations to Council the City will be conducting stakeholder engagement.
- As a result, a report is expected to go to Council in 2022 for implementation in 2023-2024. This reinforces the waste practices and will allow businesses time to adapt.
What was the diversion rate prior to the Green Routine?
- Prior to the pilot, the City was diverting approximately 10 per cent of all waste generated. The diverted material was largely comprised of paper and cardboard.
How much could the City divert at all City-owned facilities?
- Our goal is to divert 50 per cent of all waste generated through a multi-stream waste disposal system. We reached 47 per cent in the 2019/20 pilot.
