Seasonal Changes to Waste Services
As winter weather sets in, some of the City’s waste services will be changing for the season. Here are the changes taking place in November:
The Yard Waste Depot closes for the season:
The last day for the free Yard Waste Depot located near the Landfill will be Saturday, November 4. Residents can drop off leaves, grass clippings, bush and tree trimmings and other yard waste that may be hanging around from before the snowfall. Yard waste can also go in your green food and yard waste cart.
Residents are reminded that plastic garbage bags are not compostable and yard waste must be removed from plastic bags at the Yard Waste Depot site. Great alternatives include paper yard waste bags or reusable containers.
Food and yard waste collection becomes bi-weekly:
Beginning the week of Monday, November 6, residents will roll out their green carts every other week on their collection day. Weekly green cart collection will resume in the spring. Residents are encouraged to download the Regina Waste app or visit Regina.ca/waste to check their collection calendar.
Here are some tips and tricks to avoid food and yard waste materials freezing to the bottom of the cart during the winter months:
- Store your green cart outdoors to avoid the freeze-thaw cycle.
- Line the bottom of your cart with newspaper, cardboard like pizza boxes, paper towel or crumbled paper.
- Use a broom or shovel to loosen stuck or frozen items so the cart empties easily.
- Place the cart out for every collection, even when it’s not full, to avoid materials compacting and getting stuck in the bottom of the cart.
Landfill hours change to the winter schedule:
Starting Monday, November 6, the Landfill will operate on the winter schedule from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday and will be closed on Sundays. The entry gates close 15 minutes prior to closing to allow vehicles to unload and exit the Landfill by closing time.
