City of Regina Celebrates New Park Name with Community Event
The City of Regina is pleased to celebrate the naming of Māmowimīwēyitamōwin Park, formerly known as Regent Par 3. This newly renovated green space in the Coronation Park neighbourhood is designed to bring joy and happiness to all who visit.
The name was gifted through an Indigenous ceremony on July 19, 2023, by the Life Speakers, Pipe Carriers, and Helpers from the File Hills Qu’Appelle Tribal Council. The name Māmowimīwēyitamōwin (maah-mo-wih-me-way-ih-tuh-mo-win) is a Cree phrase meaning "gathering of happiness and joy," and reflects the feelings of children and community members as they enjoy the park's many amenities.
The celebration took place earlier today at Māmowimīwēyitamōwin Park, located at 3600 McKinley Avenue. It began with a pipe ceremony and feast, followed by a formal program featuring remarks from the File Hills Qu’Appelle Tribal Council, the City of Regina, and the Coronation Park Community Association. The day concluded with a round dance, inviting the entire community to participate in this joyful occasion.
Māmowimīwēyitamōwin Park was developed with extensive community consultation through surveys, public planning sessions, design charettes and public meetings. It includes features such as an accessible playground, spray pad, athletic field, walking trails, off-leash dog park, toboggan hill, disc golf course and public art installations by local artists. This space is dedicated to being a welcoming and inclusive area for all, reflecting the City’s commitment to community engagement and cultural diversity.
